January Book of the Month: Stamp Duty Land Tax

In our first “book of the month” from specialist tax publishers Claritax Books, we feature a guide to a tax that is growing in importance but that remains unfamiliar territory for many practitioners.

This title – written by John Feaster LLB, CTA, TEP, Solicitor – was first published at the end of 2011 but is already in its fifth edition because of the rapid pace of change in this field. The current edition takes account of the higher rates of SDLT applying to additional residential property, as well as the abolition of the regressive “slab” system of taxation for non-residential property.

The book is pitched at an intermediate level, to provide a thorough but readable guide for those who need a good reference work for the topic but who do not specialise in this area. Normally costing £78.50, Claritax are offering ICPA members an exclusive 20% discount during January.

Introductory chapters set the stamp duty scene and cover the basics of SDLT and then explain in detail the concept of chargeable consideration. Later chapters show how the rules are applied in practice in relation to leases, partnerships and trusts. A dedicated chapter then deals with the application of SDLT to shared ownership schemes (a growing phenomenon designed to help first-time buyers). General and corporate tax reliefs are covered next, followed by two chapters dealing with the important and sometimes hard-hitting anti-avoidance rules. The book concludes with coverage of  compliance, disclosure and penalties.

The book is clearly written, attractively laid out, and packed with worked examples. A full table of contents, together with an extract from the chapter on leases, may be viewed on the publishers’ website. The book may also be bought from that page, with or without the special ICPA discount.
