Accountants Under Fire
Protection of the term Accountant

...Our Sponsored Web Site which is up and running and is being accessed regularly. We would hope all our members will view this site to keep abreast of the situation

When we formed the ICPA we recognised that there were Accountants in Practice who were not in any organisation and as such did not have access to special rates on products nor a forum where their interest could be best served.

We have, over the last few years, developed a range of products which we have offered to all Accountants in Practice, irrespective of their qualification.

We have been very pleased with the take up from members of the ICAEW, ACCA, AAT CIMA etc but especially pleased by the take up from Accountants that did not belong to any organisation.

In Ireland the Consultation period has closed on the IAASA document Consultation Paper CP1/06 “Invitation to Comment on the Matter of Legal Protection of the Term Accountant” which sought views from the Accounting community at large in the country. The result has been that the government believe the matter has some "merit".

The response of the ICAI was not surprisingly a studied document in support of the protection of the term whilst seeking to widen to definition to include “Accountancy Services”. Their major concern is a voiced for opinion that all Accountants should operate from a “Level Playing Field”. The Chairman of the ICAS gave his views which frankly state that if you are NOT a CA you are NOT AN ACCOUNTANT.

ICPA Members who are already members of a CCAB member Institute will not have any problems with the proposals but those ICPA members with no such membership will be at risk.

We believe that these ICPA members already operate on the “Level Playing Field” sought as they hold mandatory PI cover, complete mandatory CPE, adhere to a strict code of ethics, are subject to disciplinary hearings in the event of claims by the public or fellow professionals and are subject to practice review by the ICPA.

We are determined to support those members in practice who otherwise would be forced to stand alone.
